With an emphasis on providing helpful information to expectant parents
and young families, the first Santa Clarita Valley Healthy Baby Expo
was held Saturday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
Hosted in association with a wide array of
community partners and sponsors, the event began with a free pancake
breakfast, and featured more than 40 vendors who were on hand to inform
the public aware of all local baby-related health services and programs
that are available to them.
"It's pregnant moms and strollers everywhere," said Henry Mayo
spokeswoman Bhavna Mistry. "We wanted to provide an event where
pregnant moms, and new moms and dads can come and just learn more about
heaving a healthy pregnancy and having a healthy baby."
One of the hot spots of the event was the advanced 4D fetal imaging
booth, that was manned by Dr. David Navizadeh, and was fully equipped
to perform on-site 3D and 4D ultrasounds on expecting mothers.
"This is new technology," said Navizadeh. "We're doing the most
advanced kind of ultrasound here. You can see the baby move in a live
fashion."
Instead of the more traditional fuzzy black and white 2D photos that
most ultrasounds provide, advanced fetal imaging machines are able to
produce detailed 3D photos and 4D videos.
"Usually we do it in the office, but today we're doing it free for
expectant moms," said Navizadeh about the procedure, which ordinarily
would cost a couple hundred dollars. "We've been able to tell the sex,
we've seen twins, and some people even cried. We actually had to get a
box of tissues here."
After the procedure, participants were given a free set of
black-and-white pictures of their baby, but could arrange to have a DVD
of the images created during a future office visit.
"It was exciting," said mother-to-be Leticia Delatorre, who is four
months pregnant and attended the expo with her husband David Delatorre.
"Unfortunately we couldn't see the face yet, but there is the back of
the head."
"I was nervous, but excited at the same time," said David Delatorre.
"It's our first 4D picture. We've had the regular ultrasounds, but this
is a lot more detailed."
Just across the aisle, representatives from Whole Foods Market were on
hand to give nutritional tips, and provide expecting mothers with hand
and foot massages.
"The idea of a free massage is pretty heavenly, so they've been going
for it," said Whole Foods Market marketing supervisor Tina Landrum, who
was in charge of conducting the massages. "I had one girl just kick her
sandals off and stick her feet up there."
Aside from the free ultrasounds and massages, the wealth of available
information that was being disseminated by hospital doctors and staff
also seemed to be a crowd pleaser.
"I wanted to see the venders and get some free stuff," said Mary
Dickson of Sylmar, who was there with her 6-week-old daughter Audriani.
"It's a lot of information really more than anything, and it's a lot
easier than using the Internet, and going to a million different Web
sites."
With all the available information and interactive demonstrations the
expo turned out to be just what organizers had envisioned for the event.
"The goal of this event was to get out information regarding healthy
babies," said Henry Mayo Director of Women's Services, Sally McGann.
"The SCV is growing so much with families, and we want to be involved
with their growth and development."
